This is why its so vital to study up on how the opposing side feels so you not only know how to form your argument, but know the right phrasing as well before you “put in your oar”. That quote has stuck with me and really helped me grow into my own voice as a friend, writer, and overall human and I don’t think I would be wrong in thinking that the authors of this chapter are fans of Dale Carnegie and agree with this quote. I already believed in this idea as my father taught it to me when I was very young, he always used to say this quote from Dale Carnegie, “When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion”. In chapter one they have used their own rhetoric to persuade me into believing that the ability to consciously and accurately predict how others will respond to ideas and forming your ideas against a wall of opposition is the only real way to decide if what you believe is really what you should, and absolutely the only way of convincing someone else that your points are valid.Ĭhapter 1 also address’s the proper language that should be used when speaking to others and how its not what you say but how you say it that can really make the difference. This statement is a very bold start to any book let alone a speech, but to decide where one stands on an issue of such controversy you must first follow the advice given from the book. The art of persuasion isn’t usually spoken about in common social scenarios but it is always understood that having good rhetoric can be the difference between getting what you want or being pushed aside. In chapter 1 of, “Everyone’s an Author” the authors decide to quote Wayne Booth and say, “the only real alternative to war is rhetoric”.
